Significance of Cordoba and Wolf Pitt

I am finding many of the families I am researching ending up in the Wolf Pitt area of Richmond County, around Cordoba, after originating in Marlboro County, SC or Stanly or Anson Counties, NC during the latter part of the 1800's or early 1900's. What was the draw to this area during this time to cause this relocation? What was going on in this part of Richmond county? Does anyone know?
