Can anyone please explain to me a bit about Rockingham, NC? As I understand it, this was in Richmond County in 1814? Was it Richmond Co. in 1786? On May 3, 1814 a Samuel Sumner enlisted in the army in Rockingham, according to a military document I have seen. This Samuel Sumner was 28 at the time, and so born about 1786. This doc. says he was born in "Hartford, NC." Is there or has there ever been a community named Hartford in the county where Richmond is or was? Does anyone know if it would be likely that someone who enlisted in Rockingham would live in that county in 1814, or was that just a central place of enlistment? I'm trying to figure out if my ancestor Samuel Sumner b. Abt. 1786 NC was this Samuel in the military doc. I know that on a 1770 map of NC Hertford, Perq. Co. was named as "Hartford" so that could be his birthplace, but I wonder where he might have lived in 1814.
