Information I received from George Ely Russell taken from a book entitled RUSSELLS of the EARLY CAROLINAS PART I Including DESCENDANTS of THREE RUSSELL BROTHERS Robert, William and David ULSTERMEN Who settled Circa 1772 GUILFORD COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA compiled by Frances Russell Nelson in Riverside California (1997) Chapter Three, page 218, the Randolph County portion, states: "...abstracts of the wills and deeds have not been published the way they have in most North Carolina counties. There is a distracting loss of records in Randolph County, as a precious little lady who worked as the self-appointed county genealogist took a great many of the records home with here during 1930-50, and they haven't been seen since. She had a paper bag in the downstairs Courthouse labeled for each family she was investigating. Every time she came across a record on one of those families, she put it in that family's bag. Additionally, much of the value of the records depends upon the care with which they were recorded. In Randolph County, the deeds seldom show the entire chain of title and seldom have the names of all the witnesses. It is frustrating to work with the records there. - Jo White Linn." Isn't this encouraging news for anyone researching in Randolph County. What with the courthouse fires in Montgomery County and the "precious little lady" in Randolph those of us with ancestors in these counties may never find answers. Are any of you noted genealogists familiar with this loss of records in Randolph County and the validity of that claim. Has anyone followed up on this and tried to locate the records? As for Montgomery County, I have been told that an Editor/Contributor to the Heritage Books for said county, Peggy Russell Parker (recently deceased), of Lexington, NC, was compiling a book/information on the Russells. Peggy is a descendant of John and Elizabeth Cranford Russell of Montgomery County. I'm not sure of the extent of her research or if it covered all Russells in the area or not. As of yet I have been unable to find any of her kin to inquire. Is anyone familiar with her work and/or research? Notify Administrator about this message?
