The 1850 Census of Pitt County shows in the Griffin's District:
Harris, James 41 m Laborer
Lucrecia 35 f cannot R & W
Mary A. E. 21 f cannot R & W
Mary 19 f
Wyatt 17 m laborer
Phoebe 14 f
Elizabeth 11 f in school
Olley 7 f

This would have been in the area that you speak of. My Harris line begins with Charles Franklin Harris b. 1738. He had a son James Franklin b. 1789 and a son Robert b. 1803
Robert had a son James b. 1852
