Donna,

In the 1850 Pitt County Census, a Matthew Dail is married to a "Dutery" and the transcriber has put (Slaughter) behind her name to indicate maiden name. Her age is given as 23 in 1850 which does not match. A Dutery is also listed in the IGI (which is often wrong). In Pitt County at this time, Dail was frequently spelled Deel or Deal which helps when one is searching census indexes.

They were rather casual about how they spelled names back then. As my grandfather joked, "He felt sorry for a man who could only spell something one way."

I too was in the Jackson Graveyard this summer and saw the downed oak tree. My Great and Great Great Grandparents are buried there.

Incidentally, there were at least three, and maybe more, Theophilus Dails in Pitt County. There was a Theophilus Dail coexisting with Jutry and aged 23 in 1850.
