If you go to Census Online and click on Pitt county you can get to the 1850 census. It lists a James Highsmith living with Anna Stancil, six children and Elizabeth Pollard along with two other people. There is a note beneath this information that lists the names of James Highsmith's parents and grandparents. Hope this helps. Also, my late mother-in-law's great-great grandmother was Julia Highsmith who married c. 1859 John A. Robertson and lived in Pitt county.
She may be the same Julia listed with James and Anna. Her age in 1850 would lead me to that possibility.
