I don't know the exact economic, etc. reasons for the migration, but there was a "road" that most people seemed to follow through southern Virginia, NC, KY, TN and on west. I have ancestors who left Granville and Person Co., NC and followed this route. There is quite a bit of literature on this subject, though and I believe there will be a session on it at the NGS conference in May in Richmond
