Walker /Vinson family connection

I participated in the Walker DNA Project and found that my Walkers were an exact match to the Vinson family line. We have a Samuel Vinson Walker in the family line. Somehow the Vinsons became Walkers. My understanding is that in days past, sometimes the mother's family name was taken or if orphans were taken in, they took the family name that took them in.

Does anyone know about a Walker/Vinson family connection?
Does anyone know anything about Samuel Vinson Walker?
