Hello Ann...

Benjamin Gist was a Baptist Preacher, and married Mary Jarrett Gist, an Aunt Waaaaay back of my wife`s, Joan Jarrett. This Benjamin Gist, and Mary Jarrett Gist, were first in Lunenberg Co. Va. or Md. They came to Orange Co. as missionarys, and left also the same way . Some of the group there in Orange were from Onslow Co. N.C.....Joseph Howard had gone up there, and he and his wife are buried there in Orange Co. Joseph Howard had an older (Steven) son who also lived early on there on Sanders Creek with his dad, and mom, and later married Sarah Sanders of the "Back Swamp" area of Onslow....Anyway they ( all ) eventually got to Orange Co. and as Benjamin Gist and wife Mary Jarrett Gist left with the traveling group into South Carolina, they (Stephen and Sarah Sanders Howard along with children) left with them, and others of Lunenberg, and Orange....most all others had come to Orange from Lunenberg Co., and this family of Howards mentioned from Onslow.....PLEASE PULL UP THE POST #8893 ON THE HOWARD GENEALOGY FORUM. This post has all of the activity.
The group stopped first in Little River SC and begun the first church there. (Baptist). I am told lots of records on the church in Orange Co. near Chapel Hill area.
I also have a small post on the Gist forum #1235, and since its the same intermarried family check out the Post Gerard Forum #441.....and for sure the Jarrett family forum my post #1332 and #1433....
This traveling group eventually got down near the "Tyger River Area", and the next generations on farther west and south looking for "Free Land"... My Jarretts got to Western North Carolina near Franklin, and eventually the direct family group (GGG Grandad Jarrett) up to about Adairsville, in Georgia...there in the Mts.
Remember too, that what was Craven Co. SC, was later renamed to Union Co. SC....and this is where they settled many of the first group....of Jarretts, and et. al.
Joan Jarretts ggggggrandaddy waaay back eventually joined his sister Mary, and Benjamin Gist there about Union Co. and eventually he (Jarretts) went on farther west into North Carolina, Georgia....Joans grandad eventually over several stops on the way, eventually was in Blakely Ga. Area, in Southwest Georgia, and Early Co. Ga.
Let me know as you see this how it goes for you....
I think too, that one of the Gist children also were the writers of the Cherokee alphabet... Jack Howard
