Joel Ridings was on the 1800 Orange Co., NC census.Joel Ridings and Penelope May were issued a marriage bond 8 Aug 1799 in Wake Co., NC, with George Ridings as surety. They were in Humphreys Co., TN by 1812. Joel Ridings, b. 1770-1775, probably in NC, d. in Humphreys by 4 Aug 1845; Penelope, b. 6 Dec 1780?, d. in Humphreys Apr 1842-May 1843, was a daughter of John May. Joel Ridings m. 2 by 18 May 1843, Humphreys, Mrs. Nicy White Cowan, b. c1803, Bertie Co., NC, d. by 4 Apr 1855, Humphreys, daughter of William White and Eady and widow of Perry Cowan.

Joel's children, by m. 1: William, Elizabeth, Absalom M., George, Emily, James Rober(t)son, Louisa Neel, Matilda and Martha Stinson Ridings, born 1800-1819; by m. 2: Rebecca Ann Ridings, b. c1845.William migrated to Adams Co, IL and d. in Schuyler Co., IL; Elizabeth, Emily, Louisa and Martha to Augusta, Hancock Co., IL. Absalom was on the 1860 census in Henderson Co., TN. George, James and probably Matilda remained in Humphreys Co., TN.
