John, William, & Matthew McCauley from Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland

William (b 1747) & Matthew McCauley (b 1750) were brothers, born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim, Ireland (McCauley Family Papers, 1788-1872, University of North Carolina). Their family were supposedly shipbuilders. They migrated to Orange County, North Carolina before the American Revolution (same source). It's my understanding that they were both in the War, but Matthew definately was (10th North Carolina Regiment of the Continental Army, same source). William & Matthew donated land for the University of North Carolinia (same source).

Matthew married Martha Johnston (same source) on 1 Feb 1783. Martha was born 1 Feb 1860 in New Hope, Orange County, NC. She died 28 Sep 1846 in the same place. They had 10 children (John, Jane, William, Charles, Martha, Elizabeth, Polly, George, Elenor, and Matthew, Jr.) all born in Orange County, NC. Matthew died 6 Sep 1820 in Orange County, NC.

My gggg-grandfather was John McCauley, Sr., also born in Antrim (date unknown). He also was in NC, as at least one of his 3 children by his First Wife Unknown (Samuel b 1786 NC, Martha b 1786-1796, and John, Jr. b 1796) was born there. Based on their birth years, my guess is that John, Sr., was born circa 1750-1760.

John, Sr., and his 2nd wife (Mary Unknown, b abt 1782 in NC) produced 9 children (Nancy, Ann, William, Jesse, Rebecca, Jane, Ezekiel, Sarah, and Elijah). Some of them were born in Tennessee, some were born in Mississippi. John, Sr., died in Franklin County, Mississippi, between 1823-1830.

I'm trying to determine whether John McCauley, Sr., was related to William and Matthew. I'm thinking he was very likely their brother. I'd also like to find the full names of both his wives.

Also, I'm looking for a family group record for William McCauley, as well as parents and other siblings for William, Matthew, and John, Sr.

Except as noted, source for other info herein is from "One McCauley Family Who Came to Texas", compiled by descendants of John McCauley, Sr., distributed to family members in late 1980's.

Thanks for any help or leads.
Kathy
