In Reply to: COL JAMES SAUNDERS SANDERS d 1825 Caswell Co NC and his family--a big mystery by Betty Tartas of 1320

A bio of Romulus Mitchell Saunders has provided new information on this family

The information from book "Early Settlers of Alabama" showing WILLIAM SAUNDERS & AGNES ADAMS as the parents of Capt William Saunders (father of Romulus Mitchell Saunders), Richard Saunders, Thomas Saunders who married Mary Mitchell, and Col James Saunders of Caswell Co NC is, I believe, INCORRECT.

I have spent several years trying to research this couple, WILLIAM SAUNDERS & AGNES ADAMS, and have not been able to find records for their existence, much less a will that would verify their children.

The book "Biographical History of NC from Colonial Times to the Present" edited by Ashe, Weeks & Van Noppen pub 1906 on page 386 has a biography of Hon Romulus Mitchell Saunders which indicates that ROMULUS MITCHELL SAUNDERS WAS THE GRANDSON of JAMES SAUNDERS of Orange Co NC (NOT WILLIAM SAUNDERS & AGNES ADAMS):

" ...his (Romulus Mitchell Saunder's) grandfather was JAMES SAUNDERS of Orange County, who had four sons, among them Col James Saunders , a patriot in Revolutionary times, who represented Orange County in the Provinical Congress of 1776.... and (Capt) William" (p386, italics mine)

WILL of JAMES SANDERS, Sr., Record No. A-197, Orange Co NC, dated 28 Feb 1776, proved
May 1776. Wife mentioned, name not given. Sons: James Sanders, Richard,
William. Daughters: Sarah, wife of William Trigg, Cassandra, Susannah,
wife of Robert Terry, Fanny, wife of William Sanders, the Elder. Grandson:
Jeremiah Terry, son of daughter Susannah. Granddaughter: "Casandra's oldest
daughter." Executors: son James, Richard Sanders, Wm. Trigg. Witnesses:
Andrew Haddock, James Sanders, Robin Terry.

THOMAS SAUNDERS who married Mary Mitchell, KEZIAH SAUNDERS who married Thomas Donoho & ELIZABETH P BETSEY SAUNDERS who married Thomas Atkinson are not mentioned in this 1776 will, of JAMES SAUNDERS /SANDERS Sr, but they ARE mentioned in the 1825 will of their brother, Col JAMES SAUNDERS of Caswell Co NC. Col James Saunders lists their children as his nieces & nephews.

The will of Col James Saunders connects Thomas Saunders , Keziah Saunders Donoho, & Elizabeth Saunders Atkinson with Col James Saunders, Capt William Saunders, Richard Saunders, and Sarah Saunders who married William Trigg, who are ALL four listed as children of JAMES SANDERS/SAUNDERS Sr.

Could it be that Thomas Saunders, Keziah Saunders and Elizabeth Betsey P Saunders were from a different marriage or marriages, and thus were not included in the 1776 Orange NC will of their father JAMES SAUNDERS??

More research to come!
