I will quote from "Footprints in Northampton County", an out of print book I own.( It IS available in printed form online. See this forum's earlier entries). pg 183 The 1st record of a Methodist meeting house in Northampton Co. is the Concord Meeting House built in 1795, 4 mi. west of Seaboard on the old thoroughfare between Emporia & Franklin VA. On June 12, 1793 Howell Hobbs of Brunswick Co. VA deeded 1 acre of land for the meeting house. The article goes on to say that in the early days of the church the attendance was large, being made up of wealthy plantation owners. Families came from miles around to attend all-day religious festivals which were often extended into gay social activities in the home. Slaves served the food for these all-day meetings. In my Grandmother's family they also traveled far for Church. My Uncle has the very large box they packed their meal in & put in the back of the wagon on Sundays.
