Neil , My Great Grandad that I have listed on my 39 generations of Howards, was in Co. A, of the 41st (?) Calvary, there at Camp Heath at Scotts Hill, NC. Thats all I know about my Civil War on this end.....
My mother was from Haywood Co. N.C. and she had a bunch of relatives there in the "Thomas Legion, et. al. " and her G. Grandfather was Allen Noland....and I am kin to about all of the officers of the "Thomas Legion " there in the Western part of the state......Wish I could help farther. Lots of information, and lists in "Haywood Co. Civil War Lists" et. al.
I have been in Hampstead since (or the family has) , 1762, coming thru Jamestowne , Virginia, be glad to send you a copy thru e-mail if you could use it, or wanted it.... Jack Howard, Hampstead
