I've not done any adoption research.
I looked in The Handybook for Genealogists, Tenth Edition and there was no mention of adoption records in New Hanover County, NC.
I looked in The Sourcebook of County Court Revords, Fourth Edition- they do mention no adoption records being released by the court in New Hanover County, NC.
I looked in Researcher's Guide to American Genealogy, 3rd edition- they note that genreally "adoption records are almost exclusively closed to the public"
Have you posted a query on the New Hanover County page or the Davis family page?
Have you looked in the 1850 census for NC and NY to see if you can find the Davis family with her at age 6-8?
I'm sorry I don't have an answer for you.
