GURGANUS and BARNHILL

I am trying to find out the wife's maiden name of my husband's 4th great grandfather, John Barnhill. We know her name is Susannah and she was born in New Hanover County about 1802. One source says her maiden name was MELVIN and another source claims it was GURGANIOUS (GURGANUS). We are trying to find the correct surname. John died in 1852 and from that point on, Susannah is found on census records with her son Anthony J. BARNHILL until her death so we do not believe she remarried. Any information on her maiden name or anything about her (parents, siblings, etc) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
