To better understand the records of the Bottoms family of Nash Co NC it is helpful to look at a Pitman family with which the Bottoms family was often recorded:

1_Mr. Pitman, probably b. before 1770
+ (Unknown)

+ Rhoda Joyner, dau. of Burrel Joiner, m. before 16 Feb 1813
3_William Buck Pitman, b. 1814, d. before 1880
+ Susanna Strickland, m. 10 Mar 1835
3_John Robert “Robbin” Pitman, b. 1826
+ (1)? (Mattie Barnes?) (no documentation found)
+ (2) or (1) Annis Pridgen, m. 31 Dec 1843

2_William Pitman, b. before 1801, d. by Feb 1828, Nash Co NC
+ (1) Sally Eason, m. 18 Jan 1823, Nash Co NC (bondsman Amos L. Bottoms)
+ (2) Susan/Susanna Poland Crumpler, m. before 16 Mar 1825
Susan/Susanna Poland, b. 1793, dau. of John Poland, Sr., and Susannah Winstead
+ (1) John Crumpler, son of Benjamin Crumpler, m. 19 Nov 1822, d. by 25 Mar 1825
3_William Crumpler, b. 14 Jun 1825, probably in Nash Co NC
+ Equilly Wiliford., m. 28 Mar 1848, Nash Co NC
3_Martha Crumpler, b. 1823-1824
+ John Boon, m. 25 Sep 1844, Nash Co NC
+ (2) William Pitman, b. before 1801, d. by Feb 1828, Nash Co NC
3_William B. Pitman, b. 1826-1827 aka Wm Bottoms, 20, 1850 Fed Census Nash Co
+Jackey Joyner, dau. of Calvin Joyner, m. 9 May 1852, Nash Co NC
3_Mary Ann Poland Pitman, b. 1826-1827 in Nash Co NC
+ Walter Peter Pridgen, m. 8 Sep 1845, Nash Co NC
+ (3) Amos L. Bottoms, m. by 20 July 1841, d. 1 Jun 1846 in Nash Co NC
3_(some children born after 1830)

2_Duncan Pitman, b. before 1800 (at least 21 in 1821)
+? Polly/Mary Joyner, possibly dau. of Nathan Joiner (will 14 Mar 1825)
3_(child) Joyner, b. before Aug 1821

The records for the above Pitmans seem to begin with the 16 Feb 1813 will of Burrell Joiner.
