Nash County, North Carolina Court Minutes, 1866

“Ordered by the Court that E.C. Vick Drury Pridgen & Calvin Baker be exempted from paying poll tax now & hereafter on account of permanent disability &c.”

“Commission appointed of Feby Term 1866 to audit . . .
“Ordered by the Court . . .
“Ordered by the Court . . .
“State vs Calvin Baker} Bastardy by Rachael Williams The Court on hearing of this cause on the first day of the Term ordered that the Defa. Be discharged on the payment of Court Costs & on the Second day of Said Term the Court has rescinded the former order and ordered that a (copias?) be issued vs the Defendant to the Next Term of this Court.

Bonds

“To any Regular minister of the Gospel having the care of Souls or Justice of the peace of Nash County You or any of you are hereby authorized and licensed to Celebrate and Solemnize the Right of matrimony Between Calvin H Baker and Sarah Frances Brantley and Join them together as man and wife Witness BH Sorsby Clerk of the County Court (at) (__) in Nashville this 27th day of June in the 90th year of American independence AD 1866 B.H. Sorsby Clk I Certify that the rites of Matrimony were Solemnized between the parties named in the foregoing license on the 28th day of June 1866 by me Benj’n L.B. Vester (__)” (transcribed from a copy of the original).

“State of NCarolina Nash County} Know all men by these presents that we Calvin H Baker & Philemon B. Bone are held and firmly bound unto the state of North Carolina in the full sum of one thousand dollars current money to be paid to the state aforesaid for which payment well and truly to be made and (__) we bind ourselves our heirs executors administrators & assigns . . . & dated this 27 June 1866 The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above boundin Calvin Baker hath made application for a (license?) for (marriage?) to be Celebrated between him & Sarah F Brantley Now if it shall not (__) in (__) any legal (__) or impediment to obstruct the Said marriage then the (__) obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force & Virtue. “State of NCarolina Nash County} Know all men by these presents that we Calvin Baker & AW Arrington are held and firmly bound unto the State of North Carolina in the sum of Five hundred dollars Current money of the said state & to be paid to the said state: To which payment will and truly to be made, we bind ourselves and our heirs & executors and administrators, jointly and severally & firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated this (blank) day of August 1866. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bounden Calvin Baker is charged with having begotten a bastard child upon the body of Rachael Williams a single woman: Now if the said Calvin Baker his executors or administrators shall well and truly perform such order as the Court of (pleas) and quarter sessions of Nash County shall make respecting the maintenance of Such child & and indemnify the parish of said county from all charges for the maintenance of said child, then this obligation to be Void & otherwise to remain in full force and (Virtue). Signed sealed and delivered in presence of BH Sorsby Clk} Calvin his x mark Baker (seal) AW Arrington (seal).”

State of North Carolina Nash County} Know all men by these presents that we Elizer Poland and Calvin H. Baker are held and firmly bound unto the state aforesaid in the sum of two hundred dollars to the payment whereof we bind ourselves our heirs Executors and Administrators jointly and severly firmly by these presents signed with our hands and sealed with our seales this 22 day of March A.D. 1869 The condition of this obligation is such that if the above bounden Elizer Poland shall well and truly keep a certain bastard child of which she now refuses to declare the father, from becoming chargeable to said county then his obligation to be void otherwise to be in full force and virtue the day and date above written Elizer her x mark Poland (seal) Calvin H. Baker (Seal) Test J.R. Batchelor (JP)”
