In the 1860 Nash County Census completed on August 1, 1860, in the Dortches Township, Millie is 18 and married to William Johnson (28). A daughter Martha (1) and a Samuel Johnson (21) are living with them. The family listing is 1384. I also noted that Merritt Batchelor is 33; his wife Mary is 20 and they have a son Edgar (1), and they are family 1383. So they are neighbors.
A Merritt Batchelor of Nash County made Private in Company B in North Carolina State Troops on December 18, 1861.
In the 1870 Nash County Census completed on June 15, 1870, in Washington Township, all of the children are listed as belonging to Merritt Batchelor with his last name. Edgar is 11, Martha is 10, Sidney is 8, William J. is 7, Andrew is 1, and Joseph is 1/4 year.
In the 1880 Nash County Census completed on June 1, 1880, William J. Johnson is listed as the stepson of Merritt Batchelor (56) and son of Millie (36); stepbrothers are John S. (19), Andrew (11) and Joseph (11).
William Jasper Johnson born November 1862 is my great-grandfather on my mother's side.
His father was William Johnson. If this Martha is his sister that I have looked for, then the father's name must have been William Joe (Josiah or Joseph)Johnson). I have looked and looked for a William Johnson with a younger brother Samuel. Have only found 1 today from Moore County, NC, but have nothing to compare with it for verification.
