Cockrill/Cockrell first settlement in Nash Co. NC

I am trying to determine when the Cockrell family (heirs of John Cockrell b. England 1635) first settled in NC. Ancecdotal information places their arrival from Northumberland County, VA after 1700 and before 1750. I understand the progression of county formations from Bertie 1722, Edgecombe 1741 and Nash 1777. I am starting with Nash as that appears to be the geographic area where the family lived after those county line reorganizations. Can someone advise if there are extracted tax records from the 1700-1750 time frame that I could use to see when this surname starts to show up in the area? For any of these three counties. Thank you in advance for any guidance. Mike Clark
