I am a direct descendant of Barnabas (Barnaby) Barron and one of his daughters who married a William Lee about 1773. I am estimating that Barnabas Barron was born Abt. 1720, and he MAY have been married to a Constance or Constant Mercer, but the dates for that don't add up. I do not know his daughter's name who married William Lee. These families were from the Edgecombe and Bertie County, North Carolina area, but I was informed that Barnabas Barron moved to the Nash County, North Carolina area.
William Lee and his son is also my ancestor. I have been trying to find out the name of William Lee's wife, who was the daughter of Barnabas Barron. My cousin, Victor Levon Lee, wrote a book in 1995 entitled: The Lees of Bertie County, NC, which gives some information about this family. The book is no longer sold or in print I am told. The book seems to be well documented and comes after years of research by my cousin. Here is what the book says about Barnabas (Barnaby) Barron, his daughter, son-in-law, and six grandchildren
William Lee (Rebecca's note: son of James Lee and Frances) was born about 1750 in North Carolina. William died April 1794 in Wake, North Carolina. The 1790 Census of Wake County, N.C. shows William as head of the household with two males over 16, five males over 16, and four females. This census also indicated he had six slaves. The given name of his first wife is unknown, but the will of Barnaby Barron proves he was William's father-in-law. The second wife, Susan Merritt, is proven by Wake County marriage bond records. He married (1) Miss Barron in 1773 in North Carolina, the daughter of Barnaby Barron.
They had 6 children:
1. Barney Lee, born about 1774, died after 1840.
2. Bud Lee, born about 1774 in North Carolina.
3. Talton Lee, born about 1780, died 1835.
4. William Jr. Lee, born in North Carolina, died about 1800 in Wake, North Carolina.
5. Elizabeth Lee, born in North Carolina. She married William Pace 22 May 1793 in North Carolina.
6. Nancy Lee, born in North Carolina. She married William Raines 8 January 1799 in Wake, North Carolina.
William married (2) Susannah Merritt 20 February 1787 in N.C.
They had 3 children:
1. Merritt Lee, born about 1788 in Wake, North Carolina. His spouse has not been identified. Merritt died about 1850 in Anson, North Carolina. Merritt first appears in the 1820 census of Anson County, N.C. at age 26-45 with five females under the age of 10 and two, age 26-45. In 1830, he is shown as 50-60 with one male 16-20. There is also one femail, 16-20; two, 20-30, and one, 30-40. In 1850, Anson County, Merritt is shown as age 62, with Nancy, age 65, and Fanny West. The relationship is unproven, but this Nancy could be his half sister. (Rebecca's note here: If this was his half sister Nancy Lee who was age 65 in 1850, she would have been born in approximately 1885, and would have been only 14 years old when she married William Raines in 1799 and 18 when she married Mordecia Joplin in 1803. So, this might not have been his half sister. Both ideas are guesses, although it could have been her.)
2. Duncan Lee, born about 1790 in Wake, North Carolina, died in Anson, North Carolina.
3. Wright Lee, born about 1792, died after 1870.

Additionally, if memory serves me correctly, I found on www.ancestry.com that Barnaby Barron had 4 daughters and maybe 2 sons. The daughters names were: Nancy, Mary, Martha, and Margaret. I don't remember the names of the sons. Nancy was listed with a spouse (not William Lee), but Mary, Martha, and Margaret were not listed with a spouse, and I am assuming that the spouses were just not known by the submitter. I do not know who submitted the information or if the information was wholly accurate, but that led me to believe that possibly the wife of William Lee was named Mary, Martha, or Margaret. Their mother was listed as Constance or Constant Mercer, and her parents were listed as John Mercer and Mary Thompson on one database. On the LDS www.familysearch.com site, I found a listing for Barnaby Barron's father, named Thomas Barron, I believe. The problem I am having is with the birth dates on both of these sites for Barnaby Barron. If William Lee was born Abt. 1750 as the book I quoted says, and if he was married to Miss Barron in 1773, his wife, Barnaby's daughter would have to have been born around 1755 almost at the latest, and one or both sites give dates of Barnaby's birth at 1750 or 1759 with the latter given with the month and the day of birth. This would be impossible for him to have a daughter at that age if he were born on those dates. These dates made me think that the Barnaby Barron I was reading about was somehow not the same Barnaby Barron I was looking for but instead a descendant named after him. Still, I have not come across any other Barnaby Barrons. However, I think the dates are somehow wrong for Barnaby Barron because his listed father was born in 1705 according to the LDS database, which is possible for him to have a son born in the year 1750 or 1759, but usually the dates would not be that far apart between the births of a father and a son.
Here's another interesting note: I found a historical document listing last night of a Barnaby Barron in his will (I think), and he listed the six Lee children. The spelling, however, was different for three of the children. Barney Lee was listed as Barnaby Lee, Bud Lee was listed as Beed Lee, Talton Lee was listed as Tarlton Lee, and William Jr., Elizabeth, and Nancy Lee retained the spelling listed in the exerpt from the book above.
Also, another lady wrote to me and told me that Nancy Lee, the daughter of William Lee and Miss Barron, "married Mordecia Joplin (Their are different spellings here) In Wake Co. NC in 1803. Marriage bond found."
If you have any thoughts or ideas or any information or any suggestions for finding out more about any of this, or if you know any more information, please share it with me. I would be very very grateful! Thank you in advance.
