This is James ROSS' DC, but won't help much.

There are 3-4 James ROSS' 1870-80 VA, but have no idea which one might be yours.

I'm sure you know, unless they were free, you will not find your ancestors, by name, prior to the 1870 census, only 1850-60 Slave Schedule by sex/age. Oftentimes, when an owner dies, he/she will name the slaves in their will, and sometimes even free them! Because of his birth yr James was born a free man, but probably his parents were not.
Best of luck....you're going to need it, but not impossible.
