Have you tried to obtain an obituary for Lee Vance Smith and/or wife to see if William is mentioned? If not, you could contact the public library in the county where they died to see if they can help with obit.

Yes, William may have died, but it is also possible he just left home for some reason, may even have changed his name. Have you looked for a marriage record for him after 1900?
