What an interesting story. My GG grandfather was McKINNEY JOHNSON b. 1798 Surry Co., NC m. Sarah ???. I have always suspected that McKinney's parents was a combination of JOHNSON/McKINNEY because they usually named the eldest son after the maiden name of the mother. I have been researching him for over ten years and still can't finf his parents or her maiden name. After reading your message I can see why his parents could have gotten "lost", I found a William Johnson m. Sarah MCKINNEY in 1792 Brunswick Co., Va. and suspected they may have moved south to Surry Co., NC but just a hunch.
Has anyone ever come across these people I am researching?
