There is a John Washington Turner buried in Nebo, North Carolina. He is buried in Murphy Chapel's Cemetary on Old Hwy 10. According to the tombstone, he was born on September 15th, 1901, and died on July 1st, 1938. So I'm thinking this guy and your guy are one in the same.
