Hi, Drew! There was a group of Ballews that lived in the Crooked Creek area, which is in western McDowell County. After going through my stuff, it looks like I got the Lavender reference from a previous posting here, so you would have seen that already. Sorry for the false hope :-)

I'm still trying to figure out how your Joseph fits in with the other Ballews. Do you have brothers/sisters/parents, etc? I have put together some ideas about a few relationships, but don't want to post them here for fear they are totally incorrect.

As for the estate records, I did not realize that was in McDowell Co. -- thought it was only kept in the NC State Archives in Raleigh. I'll definitely check into it.
