Hi! I'm working on the Ballews in Burke/McDowell, too. Although none of my Josephs appear to be b. 1770, I'm sure they are related somehow; they all lived in the same area. Have you run across the name of Diana/Diona/Dianah, etc. as a possible different spouse of Joseph Ballew? What are your Joseph's childrens' names? Does Nancy ring a bell as a possible daughter? How about David or Stephen (later Yancey Co.) or John? I'm trying to make some connections.

Do you know which area of McDowell Joseph and Milley lived in? (My guess is probably the eastern side, on the Burke Co. border -- that's where the rest of them lived :-) I am in McDowell County practically once a week; let me know if there's a cemetery you need to have researched... My family makes fun of my fondness for graveyards.

By the way, McDowell was formed from part of Burke Co., so anything prior to the mid-1800's will be in Burke Co. records, if records exist at all.
