I found my original source. There must have been some strong evidence he served in the Revolutionary War to have qualified for a pension.

From Revolutionary Pensioners of 1818 Showing the Widows & Orphans, N.C. p.283

No. 807 Meezle, or Mizell, James, widow Private - Commencement of Pension 24 Oct. 1814 $4 per month, $48 per annum
