John A. Buchanan b-abt 1826 Macon County

Looking for death date and place of John A. Buchanan. He was son of James Buchanan Jr. and Jane Grible. He married Sarah Elizabeth Holbrook 10 March 1857 in Macon County, NC.
I have been told they moved to Arkansas in early 1860's. He might have joined CSA while in Arkansas. His wife Sarah returned to Macon County, NC in 1862. John does not show up on any Macon County census from 1870 forward. Any help would be most appreciative.
