Chariton County:
*** ** - D.H. BALLEW, druggist, Cunningham. Whatever may be the future of Cunningham, whether it shall come to be only a considerable local trading post or ultimately grow to the importance of a city of the third or a higher class, Mr. Ballew will go down in its history as one of its pioneer business men. His father-in-law, Mr. Ezra
McLilley, laid off the town, and Mr. Ballew was one of the first to prove his faith in the future of the new-born town by casting his fortunes with it. He came here in 1876, when he opened a drug store, and the growth of the place and the increase of his own business have more than fulfilled his most sanguine expectations.

His trade has steadily improved, and he has enlarged his stock year by year, until now his store in the drug line is one of the best in this part of the county. Mr. Ballew is a native Missourian and was born in Livingston county, March 16th, 1842. His father and mother, Cyrus and Amy (Sides) Ballew, are both natives of North Carolina, in which State they were married.

~BALLEWs IN MISSOURI~

Livingston County:
1886:
*** ** - ATHAN M. BALLEW (Farmer and Stock-raiser, Post-office, Hale City). Nowhere within the limits of Livingston county can there be found a man who takes greater interest in its agricultural and stock affairs than A. M. Ballew, or who strives continually to promote
and advance these interest to a higher plane. He has a native pride in this county, for he was born here on September 4, 1844, and it is perhaps but natural that he should strive to see all its matters placed on a footing equal if not superior to the affairs of other counties in the State.Cyrus Ballew, his father, oiginally from North Carolina, was by occupation a tanner and farmer, following the latter calling at the time of his death in 1857; he
was then some 64 years old. Athan's mother, before her marriage
>>>>Miss Amy Sides, was a sister to Col. John Sides, of Confederate fame, the family being famous in the history of North Carolina; she died in 1881. The youngest of 8 children, Athan M. secured a fair common school education after which, at the early age of 13, he had to commence for himself, his father having died when the son was but a young child. His first occupation, splitting rails, was not very remunerative, and yet by practicing strict economy, and by working industriously he began to get ahead in life and in 1870 was enabled to purchase lands and stock. This he has since continued until at the present time he has 400 acres, adorned with an elegant residence and improved with fine barns, outbuildings,
etc.; and it is with pardonable pride that he can now look back upon the results of his labors, for all his transactions have been carried on in a manner above reproach. Of stock he has fine Poland-China hogs and recently he has purchased a splendid Polled-Angus male animal, believing this grade of cattle the bests for general use in the section. His pastures afford splendid
feeding and grazing ground, and everything about the place
indicates enterprise and thrift. He is a member of the M. E. Church South and also belongs to the F. & M. Mutual Aid Society.
Mr. Ballew was married October 27, 1867, to Miss Mary Olinger, of East Tennessee, daughter of a substantial farmer then of that locality, but now of Saline county, Mo.; her mother, Lucinda (McAmos) Olinger, died January 27, 1886. Mrs. Ballew was born August 13, 1846, the oldest child in the family. They have 7 children: George F., John C., Mary L., May Belle, Mattie, Ora and Charley T. Mrs. Ballew is a member of the Baptist Church.

After further research, I found that this meant that he explored unknown Indian Territories for the Virginia Company. To do this would have meant that he was some type of surveyor.
Tax records did not show him a land owner nor did it show that he was taxed on any personal property.
The Virginia Company usually provided living Quarters for those that worked for them and traveled.
Therefore, there would have been no reason for him to be a land owner.

Looking for information on the marriage of my great great great grandfather, Cyrus Ballew of Burke Co., NC to Amy Sides, supposedly of Burke Co., NC on 31 Jan 1825. To date I have no actual proof of their marriage, other than family history and an undocumented book by Violet Walton, "William Ballew . . ." I am also looking for the parents of Amy.

Thank you for responding, they are buried in Fairland Cemetery, Livingston County, MO, just outside of Hale. I grew up in Carrollton, MO, about 20 miles away. It's "proof" of their marriage in NC, etc. that I'm looking for and "who were Amy's parents".

Thanks again!

In Reply to: Two Bennett Ballews killed by Indians by Patricia King of 1337

Pat,

For what it is worth, below is unproven, second source data from the Internet which lists a Bennett Ballew who was killed by Indians. These three generations (the snapshot here) are accepted by some as the ealiest of my line which runs through Barnabas Ballew to Colonel William Ballou of Virginia.

Gwen Edmonds (and others), of the Ballews Across America web site, feels these three generations are not correct and has listed another (perhaps more accurate) variation.

This may or may not relate to your questions but there probably weren't too many Bennett Ballews killed by Indians.

Descendants of William Ballou Sr:

Generation No. 1

1. COLONEL WILLIAM BALLOU1 SR was born Bef. 1651 in England, and died Unknown in VA?. He married UNKNOWN Unknown.

Notes for COLONEL WILLIAM BALLOU SR:
Circa 1651, Colonel William Ballou, Sr., a veteran english military officer received grants from the King for his services and settled in Bedford County, Virginia. His descendants were Rice Merideth and Bennett Ballew. They later left Virgina and settled in North Carolina. Bennett was killed by Indians.

Rice Merideth fathered William Ballew, Jr., and Susannah (b. 1757). William, Jr., married Elizabeth Connelly in 1773. They had fifteen children. The Ballews came from Virgina to Rowan County North Carolina. Later they were recorded as living in/moving to Burke County. Research has shown, however, that Rowan County split to make the present day Burke County. There may have been no move involved.

Alliar's Diary credits William Ballew, Jr., as being a member of the 2nd Company of Burke county in 1790. Susannah married John Rutherford of Bridgewater.

Much of this information was shared by Frances Embry Davis who cites the follwoing sources: Edward W. Phifer, Jr., in Burke: The History of a North Carolina County; Colonel Thomas Watson in Sketches of Pioneers in Burke County; Adin Ballou in The Ballous of America; The Lenoir Topic; and, stories told by Mrs. B. F. Davis, Sr.

Child of WILLIAM SR and UNKNOWN is:
2.i. RICE MERIDETH2 BALLEW, b. Aft. 1671, VA?; d. Unknown, NC.

Generation No. 2

2. RICE MERIDETH BALLEW (WILLIAM BALLOU SR) was born Aft. 1671 in VA?, and died Unknown in NC. He married UNKNOWN.

Children of RICE BALLEW and UNKNOWN are:
3. i. WILLIAM3 BALLEW, JR, b. Bet. 1749 - 1752, Burke County, NC; d. Unknown, Unknown.
ii. BENNETT BALLEW, b. Aft. 1691.

Notes for BENNETT BALLEW:
Killed by Indians after moving to North Carolina

Generation No. 3

3. WILLIAM BALLEW, JR (RICE MERIDETH, WILLIAM BALLOU SR) was born Bet. 1749 - 1752 in Burke County, NC, and died Unknown in Unknown. He married ELIZABETH CONNELLY Abt. 1773 in Burke County, NC?. She was born 05 February 1756 in Unknown, and died Unknown in Unknown.

Children of WILLIAM BALLEW and ELIZABETH CONNELLY are:

ii. ABSALOM ABRAHAM BALLEW, b. 21 November 1774.

One of the problems is, there were two Cyrus Walkers and in this same area of Missouri. My line is from Cyrus Walker who was born in 1793 in Burke County, North Carolina. I believe he was a brother to Jessie. He married Amy Sides and they moved to Livingston County in the mid 1800's. He died in 1857. My line comes through his son Athan M. Ballew. I will look up some more stuff and send it to you as I find it.

Athan McDowell Ballew was the son of Cyrus Walker Ballew who came from ***Burke Co. N.C.**** in the early to mid 1800's. We still can't find his records of military service but another cousin has a lead on a Nathan Ballew that could be him. Cyrus and his wife Amy Sides had a farm in Livingston County Missouri when he died and is buried in Fairland Cemetary. Athan is buried in Hale cemetary in Carroll county.
