I think you are referring to James Smith (aka James Smythe), 1751-1843 (or 1759-1843) who was born in Philadelphia and then migrated down to NC, where he married Nannie Hunt in 1785.

James Smythe b Philadelphia after 1759 d Cassville GA 1843 m Nannie (Mai) Hunt 1785 Hunterville NC.
Children
1.Samuel Smythe
2.Henry Smythe
3.Daniel Smythe b 1791 m 1.Margaret Jane Strain 2. Kelly.
4.Rowson Smythe
5.Eliza Smythe m Mathew McCrary
6.Susan Smythe m Burns (or Buurris) in Calhoun counth MS.
Susan Smythe married Benjamin Burns in Rutherford Co., Nc.-04-07-1803..
7.Nannie Smythe m Henry Ramsey.

Eliza went with James Smith to Georgia...

I am dedended from Samuel Smythe, whose name is Samuel Smith in most records. Samuel was born in NC but lived in York County, SC.
