Larry, Thanks for your posting. While I am disappointed to know this William Williams, with son Joseph, are not my family it is helpful to narrow the search a little more. It may prove helpful to list again my ancestor with a bit of information about him.
My earliest known Williams ancestor is Joseph Pinkney Williams. While I personally have not proven the middle name of Pinkney, it does appear in two genealogical booklets prepared some 20 years ago by individuals working on Williams and related families. Joseph Williams was born c. 1829 and married to Harriet Jones born c. 1833. She was born in Anderson County, SC, the daughter of Wilson and Judah Kirby Jones. The earliest record of Joseph that I have found is in the 1860 census where he appears in Laurens County (SC)in the Waterloo district. He is listed as a farm overseer, apparently on the farm of William McGowan who was a large property owner living next door. While my DNA results has placed me with relatives in Group 2 of the Williams DNA project, I have not been able to establish a direct line of descent with others in the group. If anyone has information which could prove helpful, please post to this site.
