Apparently he would be a great nephew. His grandfather James McGinnas Sr would have been a brother to the first Lawson Hood McGinnas. I have not verified this, I am relying upon the following posts from the McGinnis forum:

Naomi McGinnis b.1863 Jacksonville, AL,d.04/13/1940 Jacksonville AL., daughter of Absoleum McGinnis and Mary Skelton, married Thomas Martin Roberts 10/11/1885 he was the son of Martin M Roberts, and Eliza Dickson.
Absoleum McGinnis b.1833 N.C. d. 1910 in Jacksonville AL,son of Lawson McGinnis and Sarah (Sally) Taylor, married Mary Skelton 06/20/1856 in Calhoun Co., AL. She was the daughter of Asa Skelton and Elizabeth Self.
Lawson McGinnis b. 1802 Ireland, son of John McGinnis and Mary Huston, he married Sarah Taylor daughter of Absalom Taylor and Catherina Crouse 08/29/1827.
John McGinnis b. 1749 Ireland, he married Mary Huston 04/10/1784.
Children of John and Mary:
1) James McGinnis
2) William McGinnis b. 1785 d.? Jacksonville AL married Catherine Capenter 05/12/1824 in Lincoln Co. N.C.
3) Sarah A. McGinnis b. 1799 N.C. d. 10/12/1885 in Bartlett Texas, she married Abel Roberts 03/28/1818 in Lincoln Co., N.C.
4) Lawson McGinnis b. 1802 Ireland married Sarah Taylor.
Absalom Taylor b. abt 1796 in N.C., d. 06/12/1856 in Calhoun Co. AL he married Catherina Crouse 1810 Lincoln Co. N.C. Catherina Crouse is the daughter of John Crouse and Sarah Mauney.
Sarah Mauney is the daughter of Valentine Mauney and Catharina Kiser.
I have a lot of information on the Roberts, Aderholdt, Rudisill, families. I have some information on the Laughlin, Ross, McGinnis, and Stockton families. I am seeking information in the Morgan, Bolin, an Webster, McDaniel, Hamby and Raper families.

I have some data on the McGinnis family. The brothers and sisters of Sarah [Sally] McGinnis, their families and their decendants. Would like to correspond with you. My husband was the grandson of James McGinnis b 1846 in Cherryville NC, and the son of Lawson McGinnis b Bell County, Tx.
