Heritage Genealogical Society Family History Weekend

History Programs, Research, Photo Displays, and Networking

Kinston, NC (June 6, 2013): The Heritage Genealogical Society (HGS), which serves Greene, Jones, and Lenoir counties and has members throughout North Carolina and the United States, will hold a special, semi-annual Family History Weekend on Friday, June 21st and Saturday, June 22nd, 2013.

The weekend will include history programs, research, family history photo displays, and networking. The event is presented by the HGS in partnership with the Heritage Place Library and Museum at Lenoir Community College, Visit Kinston-Tourism Development Authority, the Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill, the Kellenberger History Room at the New Bern-Craven County Public Library, and the Family History Society of ENC.

The weekend begins on Friday, June 21st, at 6:30 pm with a buffet dinner at The Folded Napkin (115 W. North Street, Kinston). At 7:30 pm, Victor T. Jones, Jr., will present “The German Palatines and Swiss Settlers of 1710” which focuses on what motivated them to leave Europe, settle in the new land called Carolina, their experiences in the founding of New Bern, the ensuing Tuscarora War, and their migration to surrounding counties during the past 300 years. Mr. Jones is the special collections librarian, at the Kellenberger History Room, New Bern-Craven County Public Library.

After the presentation, Visit Kinston-Tourism Development Authority will host a dessert and coffee reception. Pre-paid dinner event reservations are required by Monday, June 17th and are $13 per person.

On Saturday, June 22nd, the day will start at 10 am at the Heritage Place Library and Museum at Lenoir Community College (231 Hwy 58 South, Kinston) with a presentation by Ranita Gaskins, librarian at Heritage Place for twenty-one years, who will talk about the many genealogical and historical resources including microfilmed holdings, online resources, picture and vertical files, extensive family histories, civil war and colonial records, cemetery surveys, and other items available in the collection to assist you in your family history research.

The second presentation will be by Jason Tomberlin, special collections librarian, at the Wilson Library at UNC-Chapel Hill who will talk about the collections that are available for research and how to access them. He will highlight the North Carolina, the Rare Book, the Southern Folklife, and the Southern Historical Collections and how they are beneficial in genealogical research. The HGS is hosting a trip to the Wilson Library on August 13th, 2013.

At noon, lunch will be served at Heritage Place. The afternoon will be available for research and networking until 4 pm. The Saturday event is free and open to the public, please see flyer to register for the event. An optional, pre-paid, Subway box lunch is available for $6 per person.

This special weekend is a way for everyone to have time to meet, visit, and learn more about the families they are researching. It is open to everyone who has an interest in genealogy and who would like to learn more about their family history. Other genealogy and historical organizations throughout Eastern North Carolina are welcome to attend and have a free info table at the Saturday event.
