Pam, Alexander McLeod (b. about 1830; md. March 1, 1855 Johnston County, NC, Eliza Whittington) was the son of William McLeod and his wife Catherine McLean. This is proven by the Vernie Lorenzo McLeod family bible, which contains the death dates of William McLeod, his wife Catherine (McLean) McLeod, as well as some of the marriages of their children. The marriage of Alexander McLeod to Eliza Whittington is also contained in this record. A photocopy of the record is contained in the Bible Records Collection of the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, placed there by me some years ago. Alexander McLeod remained in North Carolina when his parents and siblings migrated to Arkansas in the 1850s. William McLeod (b. about 1790 Scotland, d. March 19, 1870 Lawrence County, Arkansas) was the son of John McLeod, Sr. (b. about 1760-1770 Scotland) of Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC. John McLeod, Sr. first acquired land on Black River in Cumberland (Harnett) County near present day Barclaysville on February 7, 1803, when he purchased from James Gilbert, Sr. 107 acres on the South side of Black River, witnessed by Joseph Peebles, Roderick McLeod, and Jeremiah Gilbert [Proven March Term, 1814; Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 27, p. 297]. Roderick McLeod (b. ca. 1781 Scotland, d. after 1860 Harnett County, NC; 1md. ___, 2md. Margaret McLean), a possible son or younger brother of John McLeod, Sr., also acquired 468 acres of land on Black River from James Gilbert, Sr. on August 31, 1803. The deed was witnessed by John McLeod and James Gilbert, Jr. [Proven March Term, 1814; Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 27, p. 296]. Roderick McLeod married his second wife Margaret McLean in Cumberland County, NC on September 8, 1820. Not long thereafter, William McLeod married Catherine McLean (b. about 1794, d. August 6, 1861 Lawrence County, Arkansas) in Cumberland County, NC on November 8, 1820. On August 23, 1832, John McLeod, Sr. conveyed to William McLeod 100 acres on the North side of Black River in Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC, witnessed by Angus McLeod and Murdock McLeod [Proven March Term, 1836; Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 41, pp. 377-378]. William's younger brother Murdock McLeod received a deed of gift for 150 acres on Black River in Cumberland (Harnett) County from his father John McLeod, Sr. on August 13, 1832, witnessed by Duncan McLean and William McLeod [Proven March Term, 1836; Cumberland County, NC Deed Book 41, p. 377]. John McLeod, Sr. also executed a deed of gift to his son John McLeod, Jr. on March 24, 1841 for several tracts of land on Black River and Buies Creek totalling 549 acres, witnessed by Duncan McCormick and Murdock McLeod [Proven September Term, 1845; Cumberland County,NC Deed Book 46, pp. 186-187]. It is not clear when John McLeod, Sr. died. He does not appear on the 1850 census of Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC. The Vernie Lorenzo McLeod bible contains a death entry for a John McLeod on February 19, 1853. The March 3, 1853 edition of the Fayetteville Observer contains an obituary notice for a John McLeod, formerly of Cumberland County, NC, who died on February 18, 1853 in Lancaster County, SC. John McLeod, Jr. married on March 17, 1840 in Cumberland County, NC, Mary Ann Shaw (b. August 1, 1817 Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC, d. March 26, 1892 Jonesboro, Moore (Lee) County, NC), the daughter of Daniel Shaw and Margaret Urquhart. Daniel Shaw owned the land on which part of the present day town of Coats, NC is situated. On June 5, 1853 in Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC, Mary Ann (Shaw) McLeod married secondly to John Barnes (b. November 2, 1802 Wayne County, NC, d. after 1870 Harnett County, NC), son of David Barnes and Bethania Newsom. John Barnes' first wife was Sarah McLeod (b. about 1804 NC, d. between 1850-1853 Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC), the daughter of Roderick McLeod and his first wife [identity unknown]. William McLeod is listed on the 1850 census of Cumberland County, NC [Northern Division, p. 107b, Household # 72] age 60, along with wife Catherine age 56, son Peter age 24, Alex age 20, son Hector age 18, daughter Nancy age 16, son William age 14, and son Neill age 12. William moved to Lawrence County, Arkansas before 1860. He is listed there on the 1860 census as a 68 year old farmer born in Scotland, along with wife Catherine age 66, Mary age 37, son Peter age 34, son William age 23 [Washington Township, p. 198, Household # 601/612]. Murdock McLeod (b. about 1808, d. before February 3, 1862) married Barbara Matthews (b. about 1812, d. December 20, 1888), and he too settled before 1860 in Lawrence County, Arkansas. He is shown on the 1860 census of that county in Strawberry Township as a 52 year old farmer born in NC, along with wife Barbery age 48, James age 26, Elizabeth age 25, John A. age 23, Christian age 22, Nancy age 19, Simeon age 17, Alexander age 13, Mary age 12, William age 9, Hector age 6, [pp. 311-312, Household #1402/1426]. The parents of John McLeod, Sr. and Roderick McLeod are uncertain, although a family tradition handed down among the descendants of Roderick McLeod's alleged sister, Nancy (McLeod) McDonald, wife of Norman McDonald, allege that her father was a Roderick McLeod, Sr. Traditions handed down among the heirs of Roderick McLeod through his son Norman G. McLeod allege that the family originated from Isle of Skye in Scotland. Roderick McLeod and John McLeod, Sr. seem closely associated with the family of Malcolm McLeod. Cumberland County records show that Malcolm McLeod was granted 150 acres on Hugh’s Creek (the easternmost prong of Buies Creek) on March 17, 1800. The entry had been made August 5, 1793 (File # 3701). He was listed on the 1800 Census of Cumberland County with 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, 1 male 16-26, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 10-, 2 females 16-26, and 1 female 10-. In 1820, he was listed 1 male 45+, 1female 45+, 1 male 26-45, and 2 females 26-45. Malcolm McLeod was still living on January 22, 1822 when he made a deed of gift for his home plantation to his son Alexander McLeod. The land totalled 750 acres and was located on Hugh’s Creek. John McLeod, Sr. (of Thornton’s Creek) and John McLeod “of Johnston” were witnesses [Cumberland County, NCDeed Book 34, p. 335]. In addition to his son Alexander, it appears that Malcolm McLeod had two sons named John McLeod, who were half-brothers. The elder John McLeod (b. about 1771 Scotland, d. after 1850 Harnet County, NC; md. Nancy Urquhart) resided on Thornton's Creek in Harnett County, NC. The younger John McLeod (b. about 1789 Scotland, d. December 29, 1849 Johnston County, NC) was an very affluent man in his day. He married Elizabeth Hunter, the widow of Osborn Hunter, on February 3, 1812. He resided in western Johnston County off Highway 210, although he evidently also owned land on Black River in Cumberland (Harnett) County. In the will of John McLeod of Johnston County, North Carolina devised in December, 1847, he left a bequest to the two maiden daughters of “my half brother John McLeod of Thornton [Creek] Cumberland County” (referring to John's unmarried daughters, Jannet and Christian McLeod). He also left bequest to the daughters of “my brother Alexander McLeod” of Cumberland (Harnett) County, NC The connection between the family of Malcolm McLeod and that of Roderick McLeod and John McLeod, Sr. has not been determined, but it appears that they were related, perhaps cousins of some kind. Both families are alleged to have originated in Isle of Skye. Alexander McLeod (1830), son of William and Catherine, married secondly on January 28, 1898 in Johnston County, NC, Julia Stephenson (b. August 28, 1865 Johnston County, NC, d. March 10, 1920 Johnston County, NC), the daughter of Allen Stephenson and Janetta Wilson. Eliza Whittington, the first wife of Alexander McLeod, was the daughter of Richard Whittington (b. September 16, 1800). He is probably identical with the Richard Whittington who married Martha H. Peebles on March 16, 1826 in Wake County, NC. Richard Whittington was the son of James Whittington (b. June 23, 1776, Johnston County, NC, d. May 20, 1853 Madison County, TN) and his wife Frances Mainord (b. February 15, 1780 Wake County, NC, d. February 17, 1839 Madison County, TN, daughter of William Mainord). James Whittington was the son of Richard Whittington (b. about 1745-1750 Edgecombe County, NC, d. December 18, 1820 Johnston County, NC) and his wife Olive Stephenson (b. about 1750-1755 Southampton County, VA, d. October 12, 1814 Johnston County, NC, daughter of Solomon Stephenson, Sr. and his second wife, Sarah). Btw, I am a direct descendant of Roderick McLeod (ca. 1781-after 1860) through his daughter Sarah (McLeod) Barnes (ca. 1804-between 1850-53). Mark Notify Administrator about this message?
