ALSEY PACE & CASSANDRA DEAN - JOHNSTON CO., NC
Posted by: Betty A. Pace (ID *****9305) Date: September 03, 2002 at 06:51:41
  of 1008

ALSEY PACE & FAMILY - JOHNSTON CO., NC.
ALSEY PACE (b.1785) M. CASSANDRA DEAN 1836 (his 2nd wife)
Alsey was one half American Indian and one half White--his father was STEPHEN PACE of the Richard Pace line from VA. Because of his Indian mother, he is often shown as a free person of color or mulatto in census reports. Cassandra Dean is believed to be white, as was Alsey's first wife (Zilpha Hall, m. 1820 in Johnston Co., NC--My line)

CENSUS AGES VARY WILDLY

1850 Census - Johnston Co. NC
11th Dist., Earps Borough
PACE, ALSEY - 65, male, mulatto, farmer, value real estate $50, born NC (B.1785)
Cassey(?) - 35, mulatto (b.1815)
Noah - 16 - mulatto (b.1834)
Madison - 11 - mulatto (b.1839)
David - 9 - mulatto (b.1841)
Harriet - 7 - mulatto (b.1843)
Beady - 5 - female - mulatto (b.1845)
Rhinison - 3 - male - mulatto (b.1847)
(Names aren't very dark and could read) - Lookup from Anne Miller - annetm@krittersnkids.com

I viewed the 1860 census for Johnston Co., NC:
PACE, ALSEY - 60 - FARMER $3000real est., plus $1000 pers.prop.(b.1800)
Cassandra - 35 (B.1825)
Noah - 23 (b.1837)
Madison - 21 (b.1839)
Harriet - 19 (b.1841)
David - 18 (b.1842)
Obedience - 15 (b.1845)
Riner(?) - male 13 (b.1847)
Sally - 10 (b.1850)
Solomon - 1 (b.1859 - son of Harriet?)
All of these were shown as mulatto, but the entire neighborhood was white. Black would have been one of the options of the census taker.

The 1870 JOHNSTON CO., NC, CENSUS, p. 438,, shows
PACE, ALSEY - 85 (b.1785--this is consistent with the 1850 census), farmer, $1500+$300
Cashy - 60 (b.1810), keeps house
Alsey - m. 19? - farm hand (b.1851?)
Harriet - fem. 20 (b.1850)
Sally - fem. 12 (b.1858)
___ - m. 13? (b.1857--Soloman?)
All of these were born in NC. All were marked either White or Mulatto, but not Black
A mark in columns 16 & 17 seems to be saying that none of them can read/write
Another mark in column 20, seems to be saying that he is a born citizen of the U.S.
(I will have to check on these columns because this census (handwritten) was almost illegitible) For the first time we see an Alsey Jr.--I guess the rest of the kids from the 1860/1850 census have gone out on their own.
Either he is lying about his age, or he was born in 1785, contrary to Bruce Howard's opinion that he was born in 1775 or so.
