I am researching James Davidson (abt. 1750 - aft. 1810) who I can first confirm as my ancestor in the 1800 census for Wilkes County, NC. He was a wealthy landowner whose daughter, Ruth b. abt. 1776 (my ggggg-grandmother)married Rev. Ralph McGee, 1802. She died not long after her only child, Willis McGee/McGhee was born. Willis was raised by his grandfather, James Davidson. The two of them migrated to the part of Ashe Co, NC, that later became Watauga County, where they were also wealthy landowners, as confirmed by the 1810 census. I believe my James to be the James Davidson mentioned in popular narratives about the Old Fort Families of Col. William Davidson and Samuel Davidson. While James is mentioned as a "brother" of Major Davidson, he is not listed in any of the existing family trees. It may be that having decided to sell his land and migrate to Wilkes, he became forgotten. He appears to have been a "quiet" citizen, doing his patriotic duty without fanfare. The family lore is that he was a member of the wealthy Davidson Family of North Carolina. If anyone has any information they'd be willing to share or can point me in the direction of any books about this family, I would greatly appreciate it. Janelle W.
