Augustus, or Gus, did live to be more that 100 years old and is almost certainly the one you referenced.
My father purchased the Rice Wooten farm about 1940 and that's where I grew up. The barn where Rice ended his life was destroyed by a huge oak tree that fell during severe winds in late 1980s. The remains of the house, c1845, is about the only building that's still there. The farm is still owned by Holton descendants.
Of interest, Lorenzo Holton's father, Sidney Green Holton, entered Military service for the Civil War from Union Grove and served in the 3rd NC Mounted Infantry, a Union Army Regiment.
