In the books I have for the 1850 and 1860 Haywood County, N.C. census I found the following information: 1850 - Family #234 Head is George Williams age 50 b. N.C. farmer, wife, Elizabeth age 48, b. TN, son, Alexander "Bud" age 20 b.TN, son, James age 17 b. TN, Daughter, Jane age 15 b. TN, Daughter Susan H. age 13 b. TN, Daughter Elizabeth E. age 11 b. N.C., Daughter Nancy A. age 9 b. N.C., Daughter Sarah A. age 7 b. N.C., Daughter Rachel A. age 4 b. N.C. This family might possibly be the family of your James. Also family #944 Head is Jacob Owen age 45 all family members born in N.C. Wife Elizabeth (Leatherwood) age 38, son Reuben age 18, son John age 16, son Samuel Paxton age 14, son George age 14, Daughter Sarah Elizabeth age 12, Daughter Ruth Jane age 9, son Peter age 7, Daughter Millie age 5, Daughter Lucinda Matilda age 2 and Nicholas McFalls age 23 b. N.C. who I believe was their nephew.
In the 1860 census I have a family #695 Head is James N. Williams age 22 b. TN farmer, wife Lucy Jane (Owen) age 21 b. N.C. marriage date given as Oct.29, 1857, Son Marion W. age 1 b. TN, and son John A. 1 mo old b. N.C.
In the 1870 census James N. Williams is head of household # 2-170 at age 33 and still a farmer. Wife, Lucy Jane (Owen) married Oct. 29, 1857, son, Manson age 14 b. TN, and Rebecca Harper age 46 b. TN Domestic help.
