I have a series of books based on the 1810 - 1880 censuses of Haywood County, N.C. In the 1860 census book I found in the Jonathan Creek district, household #838 - head - Sarah Owen - age 26, b. N.C., Widow; daughter, Matilda L., age 6, b. N.C., daughter, Samantha, age 5, b. N.C., son, William T., age 4, b. N.C., daughter, Sarah J., age 3 mo., b. N.C. The last child is probably your Sarah Jane Owen. There is no information as to Sarah's maiden name. However, household #837 is Thomas Caldwell, age 65, b. N.C., occupation farmer, and his wife Annie (Martin), age 54, b. N.C., marriage date given as September 19, 1815. This might possibly be Sarah's parents or the people in the household after hers is #839 - George Price, age 68, b. N.C., occupation - farmer; wife, Sarah (Caldwell), age 44, b. N.C., marriage date given as March 4, 1822. Neither of these families have a daughter with the name Sarah listed on the 1850 census, but it is possible that she was living somewhere else when the census was taken.
I did find a Jefferson Owen, age 21, b. N.C. living with his parents on the 1850 census in household #969. His father is Peter Owen, age 48, b. S.C., occupation - farmer; His mother is Mary Ann (Morrow), age 43, b. S.C., Jefferson is the oldest child listed; then a sister, Hester Adeline, age 20, b. N.C.; sister, Winifred E. "Winna", age 15, b. N.C.; sister, Mary Lucinda, age 8, b. N.C., brother, Doctor J. age 6, b. N.C.; sister, Easter A., age 5, b. N.C.; a brother, Daniel P.J., age 1, b. N.C.; also living in the household is his maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Marrow, age 60, b. Virginia, spouse - John Marrow. Living next door in household # 970 is probably his older brother, Jacob Franklin Owen, age 23, b. N.C., occupation - farmer; wife, Julia Ann (McDaniel), age 21, b. S.C., marriage date given as December 5, 1849.
These families are just a few families away from the Prices and the Caldwells so this Jeff is probably the father of Sarah J.
If you have any questions or would like me to look for more information in the books I have just ask.
