Becky: I know exactly how this feels!
A group of friends worked with me to transcibe Atlanta's Historic Oakland Cemetery.
We worked for eighteen months, taking pictures, pulling up weeds and diggin' in the dirt.
I found a Confederate Soldier "laying in the arms of Miss Magnolia." WW DYE's tombstone was wedged between the root-arms of that magnificent magnolia tree. I dug for two hours, just to uncover the stone. Then, (nearly standing on
my head) I took pictures of the newly uncovered stone.
I found his descendants on the DYE Forum and turned this CSA Soldier over to them.
My crew researched all types of records, because, many of the tombstones were too worn to read.
We discovered that at least 15,000 slaves and free people of colour are buried at Oakland..with nothing to mark their final resting places but grass.
More than 15,000 white (and mixed race) people are buried in "Potter's Field." Nothing there except grass.
This cemetery had already been "done" (years earlier) by a very fine gentleman named Franklin GARRETT.
Your hard work has not been in vain.
You did it for the love of it and I think you're wonderful!
