Please allow me to introduce myself and our organization. I am Roy Swanner, a member of the Board of Directors for the Schwanger Family Association. We were organized five years ago to investigate, collect, disseminate and preserve genealogical and historical data pertaining to the Schwanger surname and the variants of that name: Swanger, Swaner, Swanner and Swonger.
Each year we hold a family reunion open to all with an interest in these surname. We have held the reunions in Ohio, NY and PA. Next year (June 2001) we would like to hold our annual reunion in Haywood County, NC to feature the "Smokey Mountain" branch of the family. Below is a very brief history of how Swangers and Swanners came to Haywood County.
On October 20, 1747, Jacob and Maria Schwanger emigrated from Helleringen, Lorraine, Germany (now in France) to Philadelphia. They moved west to Lebanon County, PA where they purchased land and had six sons. In approximately 1795 a grandson of Jacob, named John Jacob Swanger (they had dropped the "ch" by then) emigrated down the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Carter County, Tennessee, near the North Carolina border. He married Violet Boring of Carter County and they had six sons and three daughters. The offspring of these six sons established the line of Swangers and Swanners throughout eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina (the name was spelled both ways over the years).
Two of these sons, John (b.1791) and Robert (b. 1810) show up in the 1830 census of Haywood County, NC. Thus most all the Swangers and Swanners of Haywood and other western NC counties came from John Swanger and Robert Swanger.
If any of you are interested in helping to organize the June 2001 reunion, please contact me, e-mail and office phone number: firstname.lastname@example.org and (540) 622-5028. I am located just south of Winchester, VA in the Shenandoah Valley. My wife and I will be coming down to Waynesville in July on a "scouting trip" to find accommodations for our reunion.
Our association also offers free genealogical help for Swangers, Swanners and Swongers. They may contact me, or they may contact directly our Association Historian, Dr. Alvin Swonger at email@example.com.
