You have several people of the same names mixed up. There is a message or two somewhere online that I've seen where someone did a data dump in 2000 where they mixed up a lot of the WILLIAMS lineages. That person has a Samuel WILLIAMS,Jr. married to a Mary DUDLEY, as dying in 1791 Edgecombe, and has several children attributed to them; the one who is the subject of my message died in Warren Co.,NC,although he spent his early years in Edgecombe, but he can be found in Halifax & Warren records after the 1770's, especially due to the formation of NC Counties. Many of his records involved transactions with his brothers, Solomon & Joseph John, as well as his mother, Elizabeth ALSTON-WILLIAMS-BURT, and he never lived in Anson or Wake Co. Also, since I originally posted my response in 2008, I have revised the birth years for the family since I have found deed records indicating they were a few years older than originally thought. Also, this family has left many of their bible records which identify their lineage, some are posted here (check out both the ALSTON & WILLIAMS bibles, as well as some DAVIS & KEARNEY:

Samuel WILLIAMS,b.ca 1725- d.1791 Warren Co.,NC was never married, son of Samuel WILLIAMS & Elizabeth ALSTON; note that he also leaves all of his possessions to his slave family and his brothers and their children.

There was Samuel WILLIAMS (Feb 10,1753-May 11, 1805) son of Col. William WILLIAMS & Elizabeth WHITMEL of Martin Co.,NC; this William was the son of Samuel WILLIAMS & Elizabeth ALSTON, who were also the parents of Samuel who died in 1791.
It was that Samuel WILLIAMS,b. 1753, who married on June 13, 1770 to Charity Alston DAWSON,b.1756, ; she was the dau/of John DAWSON,d.1762 & Charity ALSTON,d. 1764 Northampton Co.,NC (sister of Elizabeth ALSTON, wife of Samuel WILLIAMS,d.1753). At the time that Samuel Sr. died in 1753, he only had one grandchild, Samuel WILLIAMS, b.1753, and he was named as an heir in his will.
Charity ALSTON (wife of John DAWSON, will follows, where she mentions her children.

Here is probably who you are looking at:
"Family tree book: genealogical and biographical, listing the relatives of General William Smith and of W. Thomas Smith"
http://www.archive.org/stream/familytreebookge00insmit/familytreebookge00insmit_djvu.txt
This book incorrectly lists Elizabeth ALSTON, d/o John ALSTON & Mary CLARK, as married to William WILLIAMS, and then goes on to give the lineage of a family that lived in Anson & Wake Counties.

Williams, Samuel Jr., of Edgecombe County.
N. C, married Mary Dudley (103).
Williams, William, married Catherine Tyre,
moved from Edgecombe to Wake County
about 1780, to Anson County in 1800 (105).
Williams, Benjamin, married Elizabeth in
1 802 (she is thought to have been Leusey
Elizabeth Pate.) He then lived in Anson
County, having moved from Wake County
in 1800.
