Seek biographical information about Lucretia ADAMS, who, according to the 3 October 1860 issue of THE WEEKLY RALEIGH [NC] REGISTER, was a 35-year-old housekeeper residing in the household of Bryan GRIMES (1828-80: he became the famous Confederate Major General) when she was brutally murdered on 25 September 1860 by a “negro named Henry, owned by Mr. Grimes.” At the time of the murder, Mr. Grimes was “absent on a European tour.” (Miss Adams appears in the Grimes household in the 26 July 1860 federal census. There is a vague reference to this murder in note 55 on page 298 in T. Harrell Allen’s biography of Bryan Grimes: LEE’S LAST MAJOR GENERAL: BRYAN GRIMES OF NORTH CAROLINA [Savas, c. 1999]).” Further, THE EDGECOMBE COUNTY VITAL RECORDS, 1720-1880 says Adams was born in Edgecombe County, NC.
