Sandy,
My thoughts are that the Graves children belonged to Catherine Foster and a previous marriage. I am going to check the Rowan County marriages prior to 1836 to see if that is true. It appears that after Catherine died he married her daughter, Sarah Graves. It doesn't appear that she and Chivans had any children. His next wife was Sarah Hendrix and it appears she is the mother of his first children, Emily J. and Mary. The ages are in order with the marriage. The other children then appear to be Amy/Emma's. Correct me if I am wrong. Which of Chivan's wives do you descend from?

I also checked the Davie county marriages from 1836 to 1959 and could not find a marriage record for a Chiven Spry, Jr. or Sarah Alexander.

You can email me directly if you want to discuss him in more detail.

Terry
