Ok, so further checking revealed some new information. In the July 1, 1870 US Federal census, Davidson Co., Conard Hill Twp, there is this:

Dwelling 205.
Dorsett, George, 57, farmer, b. NC
Dorsett, Elizabeth, 51, b. NC
Dorsett, Ivan, 23, male, b. NC
Dorsett, Erastus, 14, male, b. NC

Dwelling 206.
Hall, John, age 50, farmer, b. NC (b. about 1820)
Hall, Mary, age 51, b. NC (b. about 1819)
Hall, Celana, age 18, female, b. NC (about 1852)
Hall, Sarah, age 15, b. NC (b. about 1855)
Hall, Frances, age 4, b. NC (b. about 1866)
Hall, John, age 1, b. NC (b. about 1869)

Dwelling 207.
Hall, Cela, age 75, keeping house, b. NC (I believe this is the widow of Nathan Hall who was found in the earlier census which I noted in prior postings.)

1. Is Cela Hall, age 75 in the 1870 census, the mother of John A. Hall? Is she the widow of Nathan Hall?

2. Was Mary Dorsett Varner Hall married before? You noted that John A. Hall was in the Civil War and "married after the War to Mary." If they married after the Civil War, let's say about 1866, then were only Frances (Fanny) and John Jr. the children of your John A. and Mary? Did the older children belong to Mary Dorsett Varner? Celia Ann was born 23 August 1852.

Just a few things to consider.
