Sue,
I don't know if you have found the information you were looking for since its been awhile since your post. Go to familysearch pilot site at http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/#p=home

You can type in the name of your ancestor Joshua Wallen and the place of North Carolina and view the 1850 Census.

There is also a Joshua Wallen that shows up in the 1860 census but in Missouri with a birthplace of N. Carolina.
