Tillett/O'Neal-Currituck (later Dare) County, NC

To anyone descended from any of the Tillett families listed below or to anyone descended from any of Nathan and Mary O'Neal's children.

I am still trying to locate information on my gggg grandmother, Mary TILLETT who married Nathan O'NEAL about 1830. Census records indicate that she would have been born around 1809. I have been told that she came from Wanchese on Roanoke Island, NC. This was in Currituck County at the time, becoming part of Dare Co. in 1870.

On the 1810 census, I have found 2 Tillett families with a female child under the age of 5 listed. I have not found an 1820 Currituck census; Mary would have been approximately 11 at that time. By 1830, I find her with her listed with husband. I have them as a family on the 1840 census. Both 1850 and the 1860 list the entire family by name. By 1870, she had died and only her husband and youngest daughter are found in the same household. By 1880, he had remarried.

In looking at the Tillett families that were in Currituck County (North Banks District), I find the following Tillett families on the following census records. The age range they are found in is in the parentheses. All are male listed under the white/free category unless noted.

1790-
Thomas (over 16)
Isaac (over 16)
Lemuel (over 16)

1800-
Avery (45+)
Leml (Lemuel) (26-44) (Most likely the Lemuel from 1790)
Saml (Samuel) (26-44)
Marey (FEMALE? There is only one male listed in this group and he is 10-15. All others are females 1 under 10, 1 10-15, 1 16-25, and 1 45+)

1810-
Samuel (26-44) (The one from 1800?)
Esther (FEMALE, unless someone named their son Esther, 26-44)
(There is either a zero or a 1 marked in the male 26-44 column on this one as well)
Avery (16-25; obviously not the same Avery as above in 1800)
Thos (Thomas) (1 male 45+)

1820-No Curr. Co. record found yet

By 1830, I believe that we are getting into the sons of the above, for I find:
Isaac (20-30)
Isaac (30-40)
Lemuel (30-40)
Avera (40-50) (The same Avery listed in 1810?)
Samuel (40-50)
(The same as the one listed in 1810? If he was 26-30 then, he'd be 46-50 now. If so, probably not the one in 1800)
Thomas R. (20-30)
Wiloby (20-30)

So, these are the Tillett families for the early 1800's. If my Mary was born about 1809 and is married by 1830, then she would have been a baby in 1810. On that record, Avery is the only one who does not have a female child under the age of 5.

Mary married Nathan O'Neal (1830 ish) and they had the following children:
Isaac, born August 1831
Evan, born 23 Dec. 1833
Edward "Ned", born 27 June 1836
Pharaoh (Farrow), born 7 April 1839
Mary Elizabeth "Lizar," born 1 Feb. 1842
Thomas, born about 1844
Susan, born about 1846
Sophia, born about 1849

If anyone can help me, I would greatly appreciate it. If I have any information that is incorrect or any that is missing, please let me know. Sometimes there is something looking directly at me and I'm missing it!

Thank you,
Vanessa
