It has come to our attention via legal notice in the Coastland Times newspaper that the grave site of Willis Gallop died Oct. 2D, 1848 age 81 years 21 days, and Mary Gallop his wife, died Oct. 12, 1848 age 73 years, who are buried in Martin's Point in Kitty Hawk, NC is slated for DISINTERMENT & REMOVAL per legal notice placed in the Coastland Times on April 13, 2006.
Ben Bateman and I were at this cemetery on April 18, 2006, taking photo's of the tombstones, when we encountered the owner of the lot that Willis and Mary are buried on, he ask us if we were family and we stated we were and he preceeded to inform us of his intentions of erecting a Memorial for Willis and Mary at the Martin's Point Marina (which is the storage yard for the boats), we ask him if he was going to remove or relocate the tombstones and he told us it hadn't been decided yet. It is interesting to note not once did he inform us of his already placing the legal notice in the paper the week before! Why, as Family Members(6th generation descendants) did he not ask for our views on this removal and a possible relocation site (if he really planned to reinter!)Part of the law is notification of next of Kin, if known, or by placing an add in the paper for 30 days, he had us right before him and said NOTHING!!!
The Coastland Times gives an Attorney's name and phone number to contact if you have concerns about this "Disinterment & Removal and he is....
PLEASE call this Attorney if you believe in the rights of the deceased to remain in their final resting places and to the Preservation of our Cemeteries & Tombstones! The removal and destruction of these cemeteries and tombstones is erasing HISTORY and in some cases it is the only record of some of the births and deaths that we have! This has to be done before May 13 or this grave site could very well be Removed!!!
