Ben, I read this exchange with interest, as I am descended from the Willis family. The information I have compiled seems to click with yours to a point, then I get muddled. I may even be missing a generation, but my dates seem to correspond for the different generations. The information I have on the main Willis branch I am researching begins with Thomas Willis Sr., b. 1629 in Middlesex, VA, d. 1668 in Lancaster, VA. He married Mary Bentley. Their son, Thomas Willis Jr., b. 1662, married Mary. Their son, Richard Willis, b. 1680 in Middlesex, married Margaret Webb. Their son, Samuel Willis Sr., b.1698, Isle of Wight, VA, married Martha. Their son, Samuel Willis Jr., b. 1726, Craven County, NC, married Sarah Norman in 1754 in Craven County. He died in 1782. Sarah was born in 1725 in Craven County, and died there. Their son, Edward Willis, was born in 1770 in Craven County. He married Susannah Willis, who was born in 1776 in Craven County. Here's where another Willis branch comes in, as Susannah was the daughter of Joshua Willis, b. 1750, Craven County, d. 1808 in Craven County. He married Martha Pearce in 1775. She was born in Craven County in 1755. Joshua was the son of James Richard Willis Sr., b. 1717 in Craven County. He married Susannah Delamar, b. 1720-28 in Virginia, died 1793-98 in Craven County. OK, back to the first branch. James M. Willis was the son of Edward Willis and Susannah Willis. He was born in 1804 in Wilson County, TN. Died in 1840 in Wilson County. He married Synthia McFarland. She was born in 1806 in North Carolina. Their son, Thomas Robert Willis, b. 1834 in Wilson County, married his second wife, Mary Jane Hunt, in 1853 in Wilson County. He died in 1900 in Wilson County. Mary Jane was born about 1837. Their daughter, Victoria Ann Willis, b. 1856 in Lebanon, TN, married William David Haggard Brown in 1876 in Lebanon. She died in 1933 in Paris, Texas. These are my great-grandparents. I have documentation of their marriage and deaths (but not births) and of the rest of the family from that point on down to me. I've tried to keep this as simple as possible, as I'm easily confused. I have siblings listed for some generations, but not all. Do you see where I might have gone wrong anywhere? You seem to have done extensive research on this family, and I would appreciate any insight you can give me. Jayne Notify Administrator about this message?
